Five signs to arrange an AC repair

1. Your home stays warm while the AC runs

Before calling, note the thermostat setting and room temperature. Is every room warm, or only one area? Does the outdoor unit appear to run? These observations help explain the issue, but they are not a substitute for diagnosis.

2. Airflow is weaker than usual

Check whether furniture or rugs block accessible return grilles and supply vents. Look at the filter if you can access it safely. Replace a dirty disposable filter with the size and type recommended for your system; do not run the equipment without its filter.

3. The system repeatedly starts and stops

Tell your technician approximately how long each cycle lasts and whether this behavior is new. Do not keep resetting a tripping breaker or bypass a safety switch to make the equipment run.

4. You see water or ice

Turn cooling off if you notice ice or water leaking around the indoor equipment. Water on the floor does not, by itself, prove a refrigerant leak. Drainage and cooling issues need different repairs. Avoid electrical parts near water, and do not chip ice off the equipment.

5. There is an unusual sound or smell

A new grinding, banging or electrical burning smell deserves prompt attention. Turn the system off if safe and arrange service. A smell alone cannot establish whether mold is present. Smoke or an active fire is an emergency; leave the area and call emergency services.

What you can check without opening the equipment

Confirm that the thermostat is set to cooling and the desired temperature is below the room temperature. Note any display message. Check the accessible filter and keep vents clear. Leave panels closed: electrical testing, refrigerant work and internal repairs belong with a qualified professional.
