G.I AIR CONDITIONING · HOMEOWNER GUIDE

AC repair or replacement in Port Saint Lucie?

When your air conditioner breaks down, start with an assessment of the actual problem. The best choice depends on the proposed repair, the condition of the whole system, its service history and what you need from your home’s cooling.

Ask for a clear repair explanation

What failed, what caused it, and what will the repair include? Ask whether the proposed work addresses the underlying problem. Keep a copy of the estimate so you can compare the scope of the work, rather than looking only at the final price.

Consider the whole system

Age is one factor, not a replacement deadline. Repeated failures, unresolved comfort issues and the condition of major components also matter. Check the installation date, previous repair invoices and any remaining parts or labor coverage. Ask what uncertainty remains after the inspection.

Compare complete options

A repair quote and a replacement proposal cover different work. For a replacement, ask which indoor and outdoor equipment is included, whether ductwork or electrical work is needed, how condensate drainage will be handled and what startup testing is included. Have the contractor explain any exclusions.

Discuss sizing and comfort

A larger air conditioner is not automatically the right solution. Ask how the proposed equipment is sized for your home and how airflow and humidity concerns will be addressed. Replacing equipment alone may not solve an issue caused by the air distribution system.

Check refrigerant and warranty details

Ask which refrigerant the proposed equipment uses and what that means for installation and future service. Do not choose a system using an outdated recommendation for a particular refrigerant. Review the written warranty, registration requirements and maintenance instructions for the specific equipment being offered.

Avoid a one-number decision rule

A rule based only on age or a percentage of replacement cost leaves out the diagnosis, warranty and your plans for the property. Ask the technician to explain the practical tradeoffs of each option. Energy savings vary with the equipment, installation, home and usage; request the assumptions behind any estimate.
